Ha!
Today, in the Senate, there was supposed to be a vote on a much-anticipated Defense bill. In that bill, along with a bunch of other things I don’t understand, there were two other additions:
- The repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that keeps gays and lesbians from serving in the military, and
- The DREAM Act, a piece of legislation designed to provide a path to permanent residency for children brought across the border against their will as children, and who now face the risk of deportation despite having settled into the US.
According to Reuters, 60 votes were needed to open the bill up for debate. 56 votes yes.
The bill will have to wait until later in the year to be considered again, I suppose.
USA.
I wish the immigrant children best of luck: the ones who were smuggled here at the age of two, then left here to grow up in the states. And then stayed in school, and maybe even graduated. All along, with the threat of deportation looming over them. And now maybe they could even get married and have kids, but if they’re caught, they’d be thrown out the country. For being here without the means to contest it, and without the means to return to their country (don’t argue that.)
America’s going to fall apart one of these days. Here are 50+ senators, nothing more than dirty bastards, profiteering sons of bitches with absolute disregard for human rights and the very values they’ve sworn to protect (God’s, or the Constitutions, whichever.)
